What Inspired the Story from the Publisher
During an autumn vacation in New Hampshire, the historical aspects of the stone walls of the northeast captivated me. This led to the idea that an old boundary wall could be a metaphor for a forbidden love. From this initial idea, Anna Beachy's story began to grow in my heart, as she set out to solve the mystery of her grandmother's relationship with an Old Order Amish boyfriend. The stone wall in Strasburg, Pennsylvania, deep in Amish farmland, was their secret meeting place.
Research for The Stone Wall
The ornate stone wall near a grove of black walnut trees, featured in The Stone Wall, was the perfect backdrop for an important scene in the novel. Another standout is Anna Beachy's volunteer work at an Amish-owned horse therapy retreat, where Amish and Mennonite children with special needs are helped with balance, muscle coordination, and building trust and confidence. I was thrilled to incorporate this subplot after visiting a real-life Amish-run horse therapy retreat near Strasburg, PA.
An old cemetery and stone walls at Tschantz Graveyard (1733) on Pequea Lane, along the Pequea Creek in Lancaster, PA, piqued my interest. The loosely-stacked stones in the old boundary walls inspired the beautiful cover of my novel, The Stone Wall.
