Rose Kauffman is a spirited young woman who shares a close bond with the bishop's foster son, Nick. Despite Nick's Plain appearance and strong work ethic, he also causes a fair amount of trouble. Rose's sister warns her against getting too involved with Nick, but Rose is already being courted by a good Amish man and disregards the advice.

While working for an English widower, Rose is surprised when he prohibits her from going upstairs. Rose's older sister, Hen, has learned the hard way about falling for the wrong man. Unable to fully embrace the modern ways of her husband, Hen finds herself estranged from him. Their daughter, Mattie, must visit her father regularly, with Hen insisting she wear Amish clothing and speak Pennsylvania Dutch against her husband's wishes. Will Hen be able to reintegrate herself into the Amish community she left behind? And can she convince Rose to stay away from the troublemaker Nick next door?
