The Orchard: A Novel Inspired by Childhood Memories in Lancaster County

Growing up in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, I was always filled with eager anticipation as thousands of apple and peach blossoms appeared each spring. And when fall arrived, the scent and taste of freshly picked apples brought me immense joy. I would help my mother core and peel the apples to make delicious treats like apple crisp, pies, and baked apples. My deep-seated love for orchards began at a young age, which is why I decided to feature one in my latest book.

The fictitious Hostetler orchard in this novel draws inspiration from the renowned Kauffman Fruit Farm in Bird-in-Hand, owned and operated by the Kauffman family for six generations. The story follows Ellie Hostetler, a young Amish girl who adores working in the orchard alongside her father and brothers. She also assists her mother in making cider, apple fritters, and Dutch apple pies to sell at the market.

Ellie and her twin brother, Evan, often take leisurely walks through the orchard with their beloved Dawdi Hezekiah, the original owner. The family has high hopes for Evan to take on the role of manager as he grows older. However, when he is unexpectedly drafted during the Vietnam War, everything changes. Will he be forced to abandon his peaceful Amish existence and serve overseas as a teenager?
